The Cave And Basin Hotpool
At The Fox Hotel & Suites
2011 Winner of the Gold Award for Non-Attached Concrete Spa, awarded by the Master Pools Guild.
The grotto pool is fashioned after the Cave and Basin National Historic Site in Banff AB. The freeform shape allows for the introduction of jetted and non-jetted sitting areas. The use of carved concrete for the ceiling, walls and decks provides areas of seclusion and visual curiosity.
The subterranean pool location provides a large ceiling opening that introduces the weather as another dynamic to the project depending on the season. The cave opening as seen from the hotel courtyard above draws guests to the facility and allows for a view into the grotto cave below.
The project was built in the basement of the hotel on top of a 3’-0” thick structural slab to contain high water table levels in the area. Particular attention to detail was required to create a similar natural cave environment as found in the Cave and Basin National Historic Site.

We booked the hotel based upon on the hot pool alone and it didn't disappoint. In fact, it was even better than we anticipated. It is open at the top, so snow can fall in- quite spectacular.

The thing that made this hotel special is by far, the "grotto"-hot tub cave. What a wonderful experience that was! I enjoyed its surroundings and listening to the small waterfall which made it the most pleasant hot tub experience I've ever had. It was well worth the stay to have that added pleasure. A hot tub you could truly relax in!
